The 1988 Penfolds Grange is a fully mature expression of one of Australia’s most iconic wines, now firmly in its tertiary phase.
Brick-rimmed garnet in colour, the nose is complex and evocative: leather, dried plum, soy, earth, spice and old oak, with lingering dark fruit undertones.
The palate is soft, resolved and harmonious. Tannins have melted into the wine, allowing savoury flavours to dominate. Length remains impressive, though the wine is now about nuance rather than power.
